Juan Muñoz’s (1953-2001) influence on contemporary sculpture has been immense. The 2015 exhibition at Marian Goodman Gallery pays tribute to an artist who shed new light on the way to make, think and exhibit sculptures. Through a selection of the artist’s work, the exhibition focuses on the tension between the individual and the collective. In his text, The Loser Prevails, Russell Ferguson explores the various tensions at play, first in the group Thirteen Laughing at Each Other (2001) as well as in Figure Hanging from One Foot (2001). He notes that the works create a strong sense of estrangement and loneliness, reflected also in the artists’ drawings, with isolated fragments of bodies and objects.
