An-My Lê: Fundraiser Edition
An-My Lê took U.S.N.S. Comfort, Verrazano Bridge, Brooklyn, New York, 2020 on March 30, 2020 as the ship arrived in New York to help support the New York City hospitals battling the coronavirus pandemic. 100% of the proceeds from the sales of this edition will go to the organization NYC Health and Hospitals which supports healthcare workers and hospitals by paying for meals, groceries for families of health workers, hotel expenses, laundry service, taxi rides.
The U.S.N.S. Comfort (along with its sister ship U.S.N.S. Mercy) is a subject which Lê has photographed on previous occasions. She traveled across the globe with the US Navy from 2004-2013 to explore the naval military industrial complex in all its glories and blunders. She photographed the Hospital Ship U.S.N.S. Comfort in 2010 during its relief mission following the earthquake in Haiti and the U.S.N.S. Mercy in Vietnam in 2011.
The photograph is an emblematic example of An-My Lê’s capacity to respond objectively to the historical moment. The distanced perspective of the photograph belies the ship’s uneasy status as a symbol of comfort and raises questions about ethics and responsibility in this unparalleled pandemic.
